Surface plasmon resonance on a single mode optical fiber

A single mode optical fiber probe employing surface plasmon resonance (SPR) as the transducing mechanism is described. The fiber has one end polished at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis and coated with a thin gold film. Diffraction of the guided mode out of the fiber core, after interaction with the metallized fiber tip, enables visual observation of a spatial SPR, the latter arising ...

Optical fiber biosensor based on Lossy Mode Resonances

The detection of the specific binding between antigen and antibody is perhaps the most used technique for diagnosis in medicine and biology. More specifically, the utilization of optical devices, which enable the detection of specific antigen-antibody binding by means of the monitorisation of their spectral response, is extensively exploited in immunoassays. In this field, Surface Plasmon Reson...

Optical Fiber Humidity Sensor Based on Lossy Mode Resonances

A novel optical fiber humidity sensor based on lossy mode resonances (LMR) has been developed. LMRs are supported here by a thin Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coating fabricated onto an optical fiber core via a sol-gel dip coating. ITO coated optical fiber devices present a resonant maximum absorption peak in the infra-red region which is shifted to higher wavelengths when the refractive index of the ...

Graphene Oxide in Lossy Mode Resonance-Based Optical Fiber Sensors for Ethanol Detection

The influence of graphene oxide (GO) over the features of an optical fiber ethanol sensor based on lossy mode resonances (LMR) has been studied in this work. Four different sensors were built with this aim, each comprising a multimode optical fiber core fragment coated with a SnO₂ thin film. Layer by layer (LbL) coatings made of 1, 2 and 4 bilayers of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and graphene oxide ...

New Design of Optical Filters Based on Single Mode-Multimode-Single Mode Fiber Structure for Optical Fiber Communication Systems

In this paper, a design of optical filters based on single mode-multimode-single mode fiber structure (SMS) is demonstrated. The multimode interference effect can be utilized to design wavelength-selective devices with high extinction ratio. The proposed optical filters are realized by using standard optical fibers. Two optical filters are designed to operate with wave division multiplexing (WD...
